Journalism Lecturer
Teresa Puente is a full-time lecturer in Journalism and Mass Communication at Cal State Long Beach. She previously taught journalism for 10 years at Columbia College Chicago. She was a former staff reporter at the Chicago Tribune and was on the editorial board at the Chicago Sun-Times. She also worked early in her career as a reporter for the Press-Telegram in Long Beach and The Orange County Register. Her recent journalistic work has been published in TIME, The Guardian, The Daily Beast, The Hill, The Miami Herald, Fox News Latino, Latino magazine, In These Times and many other publications. She is the recipient of the Studs Terkel Award (given by Public Narrative) for her coverage of Chicago's diverse communities. Teresa has spent her career reporting on immigration and Latino issues in the U.S. She also has reported extensively from Mexico. She has served on the board of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the California Chicano News Media Association and JAWS - Journalism & Women Symposium. She is a past president of the Chicago Association of Hispanic Journalists. She has a MFA degree in Creative Writing from Columbia College Chicago and a bachelor's degree with a double major in journalism and political science from Indiana University-Bloomington. She also was a visiting assistant professor at Columbia University in New York in the Graduate School of Journalism and previously taught journalism and communications at the Tec de Monterrey in Guadalajara, Mexico.
